
Steve Quale, on set as the director of last year’s Final Destination 5
Ever since “Oz the Great and Powerful” completed shooting in late 2011, the stages at Michigan Motion Picture Studios in Pontiac have been looking for their next projects.
But now a thriller about a massive storm — a fitting enough for Michigan Motion Picture Studios stages and 170,000 square feet of space in 7 sound stages — is coming to the state-of-the-art facility.
The movie “Category 6” is set to film at Michigan Motion Picture Studios this summer. The New Line Cinema project has applied for $12 million in Michigan film incentives on an estimated $40.7 million of spending in the state.
“Category 6” is described by Variety as a found-footage movie involving high school students who use cell phones and other portable cameras to record a devastating hurricane. It will be directed by Steven Quale, who was second-unit director on “Avatar.”
Given his past involvement in 3D, there’s a chance Category 6 will also be shot in in that format, bringing additional high technology to Michigan.
Though a “Category 6″ storm doesn’t technically exist, as the scale storms are measured on only go to Category 5. Michigan has been a perfect storm and not the storm to end all stormes will be filmed here in Michigan!
